Diego Maradona. Biography
Diego Armando Maradona is a retired Argentine footballer, a football manager. He was born in 1960 in Lanús, Buenos Aires. When he was ten years old he left Estrella Roja, a local club where he played, and moved to the youth academy of Argentinos Juniors. He graduated from Buenos Aires club and on 26 October 1976 made his Argentinos Juniors debut. Maradona played for the club until 1981 and scored 115 goals in 167 games. He joined Boca Juniors on a £1million deal and after a season there a promising youngster penned £5 million contract with FC Barcelona. At that time that was the world record fee. His two seasons at Barcelona was not an easy period because of the injuries and Maradona left for Serie A side Napoli, setting another record of £6.9 million.
Maradona became Napoli’s key player and helped the side to win Serie A in 1986/87 and 1989/90. In 1987 they were Coppa Italia winners, in 1990 they won Supercoppa Italiana. Maradona helped his side to win UEFA Cup trophy. He became Napoli’s hero but at the end of his stay there he had a ban lasting for 15 months for drug-using, indeed he had drug problems later. In 1992/93 he played for Sevilla in Spain, then moved to Argentina where he played for Newell’s Old Boys in 1993/94 and between 1995 and 1997 he played for Boca Juniors.
Maradona represented the Argentine national team between 1977 and 1994. In 1979 he was a part of the youth team winning FIFA World Youth Championship and being a part of the senior squad he won FIFA World Cup in 1986 and helped the team to finish runners-up in 1990. Maradona earned 91 caps and scored 34 goals throughout 17 years of his international career. He earned numerous individual awards including FIFA World Cup Golden Ball in 1986, in 1999 he was named FIFA Player of the Century.
He began his managerial career guiding Mandiyú de Corrientes and then Racing Club in 1994 and 1995. Between November 2008 and July 2010 he was in charge of the Argentina national team. In 2011/12 Maradona managed the United Arab Emirates side Al Wasl.
