Pelé. Biography
Edison Arantes do Nascimento, best known as Pelé is a legendary Brazilian forward born on 21 October 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil. It’s a tidbit that he got the nickname ‘Pelé’ during his school days as he mispronounced the name of his favorite player Bilé and the schoolmates began to call him Pelé.
Pelé spent almost all his playing career at Brazilian club Santos where he came in 1956. Already in his second season with the club, a promising youngster, aged only 16, established himself as a top scorer in the league with 36 goals in 29 matches and kept this up onwards. Pelé had a glorious 1962 season as he led his team to the pinnacle of their fame: Santos set up a record of being the first club to win four out of four competitions in a single year, the so called quadruple. After that season Pelé became the main target of giant European clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United but the Brazilian government proclaimed him ‘official national treasure’ in order to keep him in the country. All in all, Pelé collected a myriad of trophies together with Santos: 10 Campeonato Paulista titles, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles, two Intercontinental Cups and the most important ones – two Copa Libertadores trophies in 1962 and 1963. Apart from that, the Brazilian striker amassed an array of individual honors. He is a many-time top scorer in various competitions for Santos and many-time best player for the Brazil national team. With 541 league goals, Pelé holds the record as the most successful league goalscorer of all time. He is also the all-time top scorer for the Brazil national team with 95 goals. For his outstanding performances Pelé became popularly known as the Black Pearl and the King.
At the end of his playing career Pelé played for New York Cosmos for two seasons. He retired from football in 1977. Pelé has also earned fame for his contribution to the game of football and for his support and policies to improve the conditions of the poor. It is known that he dedicated his 1000th goal to the poor Brazilian children.
